Episode 003: Soccer broken hearts
What a fantastic weekend to begin a new season for football lovers all over the world. I call it fantastic because of the mixed shocking results on Saturday 12th of August 2017. Especially in Africa, where the majority of youths have passion for the English football league called The Premier League.
Episode 3 is going to be a rather short read 😂 and sports related stuff. Due to the rate of poverty in parts of Africa, precisely the western and eastern parts of Africa. It's quite a norm for youths to resort to gambling online in other to make some extra cash while the unemployed take up betting as a job. It becomes an addiction that can't be cured even by a rehab centre. This provides revenue to the Lottery States Board when the users encounter losses and it makes a broke ass man rich when a ticket finally wins.
Back to my weekend adventure. Saturday morning, I was enjoying a cup of coffee at the rooftop at home. Yeah, I love coffee 😍. Having a good time, listening to the radio, when I heard youths chanting slogans like " Sai Chelsea, Sai Liverpool, Sai Juventus, Sai Man U '' it's in pidgin). The Arsenal fans were busy celebrating their victory at a popular betting shop called Bet9ja, while teasing the fans of other clubs that will begin their new season run that Saturday. I met a group of guys that were already boasting that Liverpool and Chelsea were going to win their opening matches, they were prepared to play long accumulator tickets with £1 to win £4000 in return, with those teams on a straight win combo.
As at 12pm, the weather was hot, the mood was tensed. We walked down to a live viewing center to watch the opening matches that were to begin by 12:30pm. Liverpool started with a draw against Watford, Chelsea lost at home to Burnley, Crystal palace lost to a newly promoted Newcastle. There was an outcry of tears watching the shocking results, I go to find out that some guys used their tuition fees to gamble, others used their rent to gamble, someone used a whole community's thrift saving money of £5000 to gamble on these matches and they all lost. What a terrible heart break, I couldn't help but laugh. Gambling and losing is worse than a cheating girlfriend. The pains, agony and emotions never dies, especially for people that are broke.
I wouldn't say I don't gamble, but gamble responsibly. All my selections won though, after a careful research, I played over 2.5 goals singles tickets for the premier league opening matches and they all won. While others were lamenting and hurling insults at the Chelsea players, I was busy counting my profits..... It was a terrible weekend for gamblers in Africa, but a good nice and profit earning weekend for professional punters. Lessons were surely learnt the hard way. Sunday had the usual late, cozy, responsible, eye contact session. You might want to check Episode 1 for a breakdown of the usual routine.
